Begin your research with an understanding of the process


Reference Sources

Reference Sources will give you overview of subjects as well as help with definitions and key terms; For more information, be sure to look at the bibliographies for more information. Remember to use cross references, indexes, and tables of contents to help locate information.

Try Reference Universe which allows you to search the indexes of every reference book in the PA collection for your topic using keywords.


Delve Deeper with Books

After getting an overview with reference sources, it is time to start searching the online catalog for books that focus more specifically on the topic you have chosen. Click on the links below to access Phillips Academy's library catalog, and see a list of books on reserve.

American DecadesA cross-disciplinary source that provides a single, consistent reference to document and analyze periods of contemporary American social history.
American History OnlineAmerican History Online is an easy to use resource center that includes background information on all American History from the Colonial Era to the present. Includes biographies, events and topics, primary sources, timelines, images and video, etc.
Encyclopedia BritannicaAn electronic version of the 32 volume encyclopedia
CQ ResearcherCovers American government, politics, history, public policy, and current affairs
Opposing Viewpoints OnlineOffers pro/con arguments and essays on a variety of topics as well as general magazine searches.
Points Of View Reference CenterAnother pro/con database. This covers more topics than opposing viewpoints, but usually with less content. Also includes a general magazine and reference search.
