Definition

Recollection is the mental re-experiencing of some aspect or aspects of the orginial event. Familiarity is the certainty that the item was presented but without being able to re-experience any aspect of the original event.

Significance

This theory of regonition was suggested by Tulving. He claimed that recognition involves a judegement that can be based on two types of subjective experiences: recollection or familiarity. False memory experiements have given evidence to the idea that false memory is based on recollection, even though, familiarity seems to be the most logical answer.
