Definition

(to perceive, encode, identify, name) pattern recognition is the process of translating physical aspects in the outside world into mental or psychological representations, where it is then stored into long term memory. For example: When you see a letter B written in different fonts or in cursive handwriting, you still recognize it as the letter B.

Pattern recognition allows you to translate the physical energy (out there) into a psychological representation (in the mind.) It allows us to recognize patterns in order to identify information coming in.

Significance

Pattern recoginition takes place instantaneously, so we do not have to even think about it. Even when we do things that we think require no thought, there are always processes going on in the brain. Making objects irrecognizable by deleting vertices makes them harder to recognize. However, places of deletion that are in between points on the line of an object allow for the accurate recognition of the object. In other words, where you delete matters.
