A measure of how much information can be stored in STM; also a measure of the duration of information in STM. An example of this is the digit span task in which the participant will read a series of numbers and then attempt to write them down in the correct order. The longest string of the participant is able to reproduce without error is the participant's digit span. (Goldstein, 2008) .

Significance
The Memory span task determines that information is lost quickly from short term memory and also that there is a limit to how much information can be held there. .
