Definition

There is no clear definition as to what a feature is or if it really exists. A feature is the basic element of perception.

Distinctive features are characteristics that allow you to distnguish other objects. Feature models assume that the basic element of perception is a feature.

Features can be explained as basic structures that create the objects that we see. When we percieve an object, we are actually percieving that feature it is built up out of.

Significance

Features allow us to identify and distinguish between different objects. We know that an orange and an apple are two different fruits because of their features. Their features allow us to identify these two things as two different fruits (i.e. an orange and an apple) even though they are similar in shape. This concept is vital because perception is the process of building objects up out of features.
